Crazy day at school

The second to last week of school for Sanaa was spirit week. Each day they got to dress according to a different theme. I didn't even think to take pictures each day. However, I did take pictures for crazy day where the kids could wear mismatched clothes and have silly hair styles. I put 6 pony tails in Sanaa's hair. Both Layla and Malakai also wanted to be silly, so Layla asked for 5 pony tails and Malakai put a bunch of water on his head to make his hair lay down. Layla actually wore her hair like that all day even though she didn't go to school that day.

Sanaa's birthday interview

While Sanaa loves to play outside, she also loves spending time drawing, painting, and other crafts. I just recently taught her to finger crochet and she made a strap for a purse that I made her. She was very proud that she helped make part of her purse. She is also interested in learning how to cook and will even help start the laundry and do some cleaning for me. I don't remember why she posing in the first picture but she insisted I take her picture that way!

Sanaa's last day of 1st grade

A few weeks ago Sanaa had her last day of 1st grade. She had a half day and right after she was out of school we headed to the coast with Nate's parents. This was a big year for her. It was the first time she was in school all day. In our area we only had half day kindergarten which is what she attended last year.

Sanaa also moved schools for 1st grade. Our town has a Spanish immersion school and we enrolled her there. There were so many 1st graders trying to get in that the school held a lottery and Sanaa's number got picked. We were very excited. But that also meant her teachers would be speaking Spanish 80% of time during the school day. So it was huge adjustment for her going into all day school AND having her teachers speak Spanish.

By the end of the year she loved it! She understands quite a bit of Spanish which is awesome.

On the last day of school I was able to spend the morning with her. Below was her classroom. For the last day they had a special assembly and then in their classrooms they got to enjoy several different fun activities.

Maestra Nava was the teacher that Sanaa finished 1st grade with. Maestra Santana (in the second picture) was her first teacher had to leave just before Christmas. Sanaa really missed Maestra Santana but seemed to adjust fine to Maestra Nava.

Happy 7th Birthday Sanaa!

Yesterday we celebrated Sanaa's 7th birthday. She was so excited about her birthday. We of course began the day with the birthday donut. Both Layla and Malakai sang to Sanaa. Nate had to go into work early and was gone before breakfast.

Sanaa had asked for a stuffed panda for her birthday and Uncle Caleb and Aunt Sarah sent one. She was so excited! The panda has been going every where with us. Much like her beloved Tiger use to go everywhere. Now the panda comes with us.

Sanaa has grown so much over the last year. She's lost 6 or 7 teeth (I lost count). She is reading so much better and loves books. She spends a lot of time outside playing and has a wonderful imagination. I enjoy listening to the kids when they are outside and hearing what is going on in their pretend world.

Sanaa also loves arts and crafts. She is constantly coming up with new crafty ideas. She made me a ring holder out of a seashell and cotton stuffing one afternoon.

On a different afternoon I went out to check on the kids in their "hideout" (a.k.a the side of our house) and Sanaa showed me how she had drawn out a science experiment on the fence. She had taken a rock and colored it with a crayon. Then she put the rock in water and discovered that the crayon stayed on the rock. She had some other science experiments on the fence too, but I don't remember what they were.

Finally, to aid Sanaa in developing her art skills both grandparents gave her some money for art lessons. There is a store in the mall near us called Young Art Lessons and I'm able to drop Sanaa off for a period of time while the store employees help her with a painting. At the store she wanted to draw Ariel and the employee helped show her how to draw the face, arms, and tail. She colored it herself and also learned about blending colors to make the different shades of green and blue. Sanaa mentioned something about mixing the paint with vegetable oil and it make the paint lighter or something. I didn't really understand so I'll have to ask about that next time I drop her off.
