Birthday weekend

Sunday was my birthday. I turned 30 on the 30th! Sanaa also turned 14 months old on Sunday. So in a way, it was a birthday for both of us. It was a good weekend. Saturday evening Nate's parents took us out to eat for my birthday dinner. We went to a place called the Rainforest Cafe. Since Sanaa loves animals we thought she would enjoy this restaurant. We didn't anticipate that the loud animal sounds would actually scare Sanaa. Oops. Each time the gorilla started making noise Sanaa reached out for Papa Gene to hold her. By the time we got to dessert, Sanaa started to warm up to the restaurant and began pointing out the different animals she saw. I think we'll wait a couple years before taking her back and maybe she'll enjoy it more.

Striking a pose.
Nate got me a baby sling for my birthday. I really enjoy it. It makes carrying Sanaa so much easier and she actually enjoys sitting in it.
Yum! So much food. We left stuffed.
We had a chocolate volcano for dessert. Sanaa wasn't too sure what to make of the sparkler on top.
Me and my girl on Sunday. I wanted at least one picture of the two of us on the 30th.

Simple pleasures

I love how the simplest things can keep a child entertained for long periods of time. Sanaa is busy discovering the world around her and everything is new to her. I often forget this because many things not new to me. Today a box arrived from my mom and styrofoam peanuts were used to cushion the contents. Once I removed the contents, Sanaa was very curious about the peanuts. I picked her up and sat her in the box with the peanuts and she had great time! I don't remember a box filled with peanuts being so entertaining, but it was a new experience for Sanaa.

I also received a flower arrangement from my mom. Sanaa loves flowers and when she saw the flowers after her nap all she wanted to do was smell them. She kept turning the mug around so that she could smell a different flower. Eventually she pulled two flowers out of the arrangement and carried them around.

After smelling the flowers for quite some time and carrying her flowers around, she discovered that the petals on a flower can be pulled off! She had a blast and we ended up with yellow petals all over the carpet. I wanted to jump in and take the flower away from her, but stopped myself because she was very amused with her new discovery and I knew I could just vacuum the petals up.

No words necessary

These pictures do not need any words. Suffice it to say, a little girl (who will remain nameless) had a blast this evening in the bathroom. (The pictures were taken with my phone and aren't the best.)

I left the toilet paper out for Nate to see when he got home this evening and we had a good laugh. Nate then informed me that while he was watching Sanaa this morning (I was out and about) he found Sanaa playing quietly with the box of wipes. She had discovered the button to push it open and was pulling wipe after wipe out of the box very contentedly. I wonder what she'll discover tomorrow......

"Uh-oh" is the newest word (or phrase?) heard in our house. We came home from our weekend with our small group and suddenly Sanaa began saying "Uh-oh." She says it quite often and I find it cute (most of the time). When she throws food on the floor she'll say "Uh-oh." Today, as she'll fell over in slow motion she said, "Uh-oh." I'm also amazed at how much she seems to understand.

She has also figured out how to go down our stairs backwards. I still haven't figured out how to install a gate at the top of our stairs, so I've been working with her on going down the steps feet first and not head first. Yesterday and today she's crawled to the top of our steps, reached her hand out, stopped, and then turned around so that she could go down feet first. I'm so excited that she finally caught on to this!

Last week Sanaa spent her birthday gift card from Uncle Caleb and Aunt Sarah on a mini kitchen. It has one burner, an oven, a toaster, and a washing machine. She's been doing a lot of "cooking" this week.
I know this is a horrible picture, but bear with me because there is a story behind the picture. Yesterday I sat my homemade mocha on our coffee table while Sanaa was upstairs resting. Her rest period didn't last very long and she started screaming. So I brought her back downstairs to play. I had completely forgotten about my mocha when we came downstairs and began organizing some stuff. When I turned around I found Sanaa with one hand in my mocha, mocha smeared all over her face, and her second hand holding onto the cup handle. She had a huge smile on her face. I attempted to get a picture, but once I pulled out the camera she kept crawling towards me. This was the best shot I had. I also learned my lesson: keep all drinks in the kitchen if Sanaa is awake. Thankfully she didn't spill any of it. She just enjoyed tasting it.
The past couple of mornings we've spent some time outside. I'm afraid that the morning nap is gone. It's rare that Sanaa takes a morning nap now (and I really miss those naps!). Luckily the mornings haven't been too hot so in order to fill our time I've taken Sanaa outside and let her practice walking. As the weather cools I know we'll be spending lots of time outside!

Weekend with our small group

This past weekend our small group had it's annual get away. This is the 3rd year we've taken a weekend and driven up to Tanglewood Resort on Lake Texoma. We spent the weekend swimming, eating, playing games, and relaxing. We all had a great time and Sanaa was exhausted when we returned home yesterday. She went to bed at 6pm and didn't wake up until 9am (15 hours!). She's never slept that long.

Here are a few pictures from our weekend. I wanted to take more, but forgot my camera most of the time.

An intense game of water basketball. Do not underestimate the girls in our group. They are just as competitive as the guys!
Sanaa hanging out after swimming. I couldn't get her to look at the camera.
Sanaa's friend Ainsley. The girls had a lot of fun together. Ainsley even gave Sanaa a kiss when it was time for all of us to head home.
Getting ready to play a game.
Karissa, Joey, and Emily chilling by the pool.

Sharing is NOT fun

Sanaa and Silver have something in common: they both love boxes and neither likes to share. So, when a box arrived today I had a mini cat/sibling fight on my hands. At first Sanaa completely ignored the box while Silver sat in it. Then Sanaa decided that Silver's idea of being in the box was way cooler than playing with her toys. Silver was nice enough to move out of Sanaa's way the first time and sat off to the side watching her and cleaning his fur. But when Silver decided Sanaa's turn was up . . . . well Sanaa strongly disagreed and like any good mother I took the opportunity to snap some pictures. Here's the sequence:

Sanaa crawled in and then out of the box.
Sanaa is out, so Silver climbed in.
Sanaa turned and discovered Silver in the box. She attempted to push him out of the way.
The pushing didn't work, so Sanaa sat back and screamed.
After I snapped my pictures I picked Silver up and he let me know that he was not happy with me for removing him from the box (he bit me). But I let him go outside and he was happy with that. Sanaa was also happy because she got the box to herself.

A very busy week

Last week was a very busy week for me. Sanaa was sick most of the week while I was busy getting my new business up and running. A good friend of mine from high school (Michelle) introduced me to Premier Designs (high fashion jewelry) and I am now an independent distributor for them. Last week I had my first two shows, one Thursday evening and one Saturday afternoon. Michelle flew down from Kansas on Thursday to train me and help with my two shows. The shows went really well and I was very thankful Michelle was able to be here! She flew back to Kansas on Sunday and now I'm on my own with another show scheduled for this Friday.

Uncle Caleb and Aunt Sarah also came down this weekend and we had a great time hanging out with them. Their visits are always too short, but hopefully we'll see them again in a couple months. All the activity and visitors wore Sanaa out really good. She slept this morning until about 8:30 which is late for her. She's typically up shortly after 7:00.

Currently, Sanaa prefers to play with the cat toys. She has tried to share with the cats and will take a ball over to one of the cats and wait for them to play with it, but they just look at her.

So much to discover

Sanaa is very busy discovering the world around her. She is practicing her walking, climbing on stuff she shouldn't be, and terrorizing the cats. Here are some pictures of our busy little girl and some of the activities she enjoys right now.

Sitting in the new (yet old) chair that Grandma Lind sent. This is a chair my mom used as a little girl and one I remember using as well. Now, it's Sanaa's turn.
Sanaa loves doing somersaults. Unfortunately, this is all the farther she can get on her own, so I help her out.
Drawing on her AquaDoodle. I was very excited to see that Silver treats Sanaa just like he treats us. He sits on whatever we are working on.
The best toy ever! The giant box Sanaa's little rocking chair arrived in. Sanaa and Silver have had a great time playing in it.
This picture is for Papa Gene and Gramma Carol. This toy is now for crawling under. She barely fits under it, so I'm not sure why she insists on crawling under it.

Sanaa finally gets on her feet

We've been waiting for Sanaa to start walking either by holding onto a toy or by holding our hands. She is so independent that she refuses to hold our hands. I've tried to encourage her to walk with her push toy, but over the past few weeks she'll refuse and scream at me. Last night she finally walked while holding onto her toy. Nate's parents were here for dinner and we were all excited as we watched her. Sanaa has been pushing her toy around this morning as well and now won't stop walking with it. It's awesome! I did take some video of her last night, but it was quite noisy and not the best video. So I shot some more video this morning for you all to see.
