1 month old

Yesterday Sanaa turned 1 month old. I had fully intended to make a post, but it was one of those days where she only liked to sleep if you were holding her. She did finally sleep for about 1 hour and 45 minutes in the afternoon and I scrambled to get laundry, thank you notes, and other stuff done before she woke.

Our evening didn't go much better. She woke from her afternoon nap around 4pm and was pretty much awake until 10pm. She would nap for 10 to 15 minutes while you held her, but the moment you attempted to put her in her crib she woke up crying. Nate and I had planned to watch a movie last night and it took us all evening to get through it! The night before Sanaa fell asleep at 6pm and I had to wake her before I went to bed so that I could feed her. So, we had hoped to have another evening like that. But it wasn't to be. Oh, well. There will come a day when Nate and I will get more of an evening together. It might not happen for 20+ years, but that day will come. :-)

So, here is Sanaa's 1 month picture. I caught her during a calm moment. The chair she is in vibrates and this time it actually calmed her down. Other times, I'm not so lucky.
This next picture was too cute to pass up. I think Silver is finally getting jealous of Sanaa. He use to ignore her, but now if he is inside and we're holding her, he will take the opportunity to climb on our lap as well. It doesn't matter whether or not you have room on your lap because he will make room (somehow). He has climbed on my lap as well and will just start purring. Sanaa has even been crying a couple times when Silver climbed on my lap, but that didn't seem to bother him.

Growing fast

I just had to share this picture with all of you. Last week we bought a new camera (an early birthday present for me, even though my birthday is still a month away). I've been playing around with the camera and I got lucky when I took this picture. It's one of the few smiles I've caught so far. I know there will be more to come, but I was excited to at least capture this one.
Yesterday I also discovered that Sanaa is growing fast. I pulled out one of her newborn outfits and found out that it was a little snug. Just last week it fit her fine. I guess now I'll have to start a pile of clothes that she's out growing. She'll be 4 weeks old on Monday, but I don't think I expected her to out grow some of her clothes so quickly!

We are also going transition Sanaa into her crib. She's getting to big to sleep in her bassinet. She took a nap in her crib yesterday. Today I'm going to go buy a night light to place in her room so that it's not as dark during the night. This way I won't have to turn on the overhead light or her lamp. Now that she'll be sleeping her room, we'll have to check to make sure the cats don't get stuck in there with her. I know our one cat has really enjoyed sleeping under her crib, while the other cat has started sleeping on the futon. Apparently it's the best room to nap in!

Some more pictures

I know, it's been awhile since I've updated the post. I'm currently taking two on-line courses and between class work and taking care of Sanaa I have found that I have very little time to do much else. But, I'm almost finished with my summer classes (yeah!). I have two assignments due this weekend and I'll feel much better once they are done and turned in. After that I just have to take the final exam.

Anyway, since I last posted, my brother and his wife stopped in for a visit. It was a lot of fun having them here for a couple of days. They live in Oregon, so it was really great that they were able to come meet Sanaa shortly after she was born.

Sanaa looks so much longer, even though she's only 3 1/2 weeks old. She seems to be growing quickly. It's been really neat to watch Sanaa just stare at Nate. Nate also seems to have the magic touch at times. There have been a few occasions where Sanaa will be screaming, but once Nate is holding her she calms right down. Nate has also changed a couple of diapers as well and has now been initiated into parenthood by being pooped on. So, now both of us have been initiated by Sanaa. Aren't we lucky? Below is a picture of Sanaa looking at Nate.

2 week check up

On Friday we took Sanaa in for her 2 week check up. We were scheduled to go on Monday, but the doctor's office called Thursday asking if we could come in on Friday instead. Sanaa is almost back to her birth weight. She is one ounce away. Her length is still the same, but the doctor was pleased with how she's doing.

Sanaa did get her first shot. I was not prepared for that. The nurse gave her the shot and Sanaa's face got really red. She opened her mouth as wide as possible, but no sound came out for about 2 seconds and then screamed louder than I've ever heard.

However, that was not the end for her. We then had to go over the hospital (our pediatrician's office is in a medical building connected to the hospital) so that the newborn PKU screening could be done. So not only did she get a shot in her left thigh, but she was pricked on her right heel so that they could get a blood sample. I'm so glad Nate was along. I had no idea any of this was going to happen. I think the visits were harder on me than on Sanaa.

Anyway, it was a long morning on Friday. We left our house at 10am and didn't get home until noon. But Sanaa is much happier now!

Here are some pictures from the week. The first is Sanaa hanging out on her play mat. She seems very alert at times and loves to look at what is around her.
Her first sponge bath at home. At first she didn't mind the sponge bath, but she changed her mind quickly and let us know about it.
Our family photo. We took this last Sunday. Sanaa would have been about 6 days old.

Weight check

Today we took Sanaa back to the doctor for a weight check since she had lost more than the doctor liked. On Saturday she had lost 9% of her birth weight and was down to 7lbs and 4oz. Today she was up to 7lbs and 9.5oz. So, there is no need for us to supplement. The doctor was quite pleased with her weight gain. We'll be going back to the doctor next Monday (14th) for her 2 week check up.

So, a funny story for you all to laugh at. I know my parents and Nate laughed. As many of you know I have worked as a nanny for many years. In all that time I have never been peed or pooped on. I have had kids throw up on me, but that's been it. Well this weekend I was peed and pooped on. I thought little boys were suppose to be the dangerous ones, but apparently our daughter is trying to compete with the boys. It took Sanaa just under a week to break me in. I'm thinking about making Nate do all the diaper changes now.

First doctor's visit

This morning we had Sanaa's first doctor's visit. The doctor just wanted to check on her coloring, check her weight, and see if I had any questions. Her coloring looks very good (no worries about jaundice). However, she's lost more weight than the doctor would like. The doctor said that a newborn will lose 5% to 6% of their birth weight, but Sanaa lost 9% (she's down to 7 lbs and 4 oz). So we go back on Monday for another weight check. This could be due to my milk just coming in. I was supplementing some before my milk came in because Sanaa was so hungry. On Monday we'll find out if I need to start supplementing again, but with the way Sanaa has been eating I doubt we will.  Anyway, here are some more pictures.

Almost two days old

Nate and I were just talking about how it seems as though Sanaa has been with us for quite awhile, but she's not even two days old (tonight at 8pm she'll be 48 hours old!). Here are some updated pictures of Sanaa that I took today.

Proud daddy holding his little girl!
My time at the hospital has been passing fairly quickly. My doctor told me this morning that she may discharge me tomorrow. That would be great! My doctor thinks I'm doing very well and I've been feeling pretty good. I've moved around the room a lot more today. Although it's painful, moving around has kept me from getting really stiff.

Sanaa is also doing very well. I did have a slightly rough night with Sanaa. I would feed her and then have a really hard time calming her down. I talked with her pediatrician this morning and the pediatrician thinks that Sanaa is still hungry after I feed her and since my milk has not come in yet she is not getting nearly as much as she wants. So, I have started to supplement with formula (but only a very small amount). So far, feeding her first and then giving her a small supplement has been working. I know I'll be really happy once my milk does come in. The nurses have said that my milk should hopefully come in tomorrow or Friday.

Anyway, I just wanted to share some more pictures with you.
